The neutral terminal on a smart switch will often be silver, and is used to connect a circuit neutral wire to the switch. Because of this, the switch may also require a neutral wire. These types of switches will usually offer some extra functionality, other than simply turning the lights on/off. Depending on how the switch is toggled, one of these terminals will always have voltage (assuming the circuit is working properly). These terminals are used to carry power between the switches, and will alternate being live. This terminal will typically be green, and will likely be either at the top of the bottom of the switch. The common terminal will either be connected to the ungrounded (hot) LINE wire coming from the power source, or to the ungrounded (hot) LOAD wire going to the load (lights). It may be brass, in which case it will be labeled or marked in some way as common. This terminal will typically be black, or some color other than green or silver. You can always have them do the wiring, and you can hook up the smart switches yourself. When working with basic 3-way snap switches, the switch should have four terminal. If you aren't comfortable working with electricity, contact a professional. It can damage the smart switches or KILL you. Be aware that depending on where you live, you may need an inspection before you close up your walls. * Please be safe! Follow all local and national building codes. There will be many more how-to articles, and videos coming from home automation, home theater, and renewable energy topics. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel, leave comments, and to give the video a thumbs up. Please see our supplemental YouTube video, that will show you how to wire these 3 way switches. The savings from not hiring an electrician alone will more than pay for the cost of the switches. Granted, the smart switches are much more expensive, they are $35-$50 compared to $1-$2 for a traditional 3 way switch, but when you add in the time it would take to wire, or the cost to hire an electrician, plus all of the additional features you get with the smart switches, I think they are worth it. There are many ways to wire a three way switch, but unless your walls are open, and your not worried about dimming from multiple locations, or being able to control the lighting from other devices, then I think the best way to wire a 3 way switch, is to use smart switches. Here is a 6 button switch Insteon switch. It will only be used to power the second switch, and there is no need to run a wire between the switch boxes.Įven if your second location already has a switch in it, you can get a multi button Insteon switch, and then use the primary switch for the light switch it is replacing, and one of the secondary buttons for your three way switch. Otherwise, you can get power from the nearest location. If you already have a location for the second switch, and it has power, then you don't need to run any additional wires. You can use the old work (wing) boxes for putting an electrical box into a wall that is already covered with drywall. The only additional wiring you need, is to get a feed to wherever you want the second switch, using a 14/2 wire. Then you only need to run a 14/2 feed to the second switch location.Įxisting/Replacement- If you want to add a 3 way switch to an existing light switch, then you don't need any additional wiring at that location. New- If you are adding a new switch, then you run the 14/2 from the light, and a 14/2 from the electrical panel, or from a sub feed, into the same box. Similarly, 14/3 has a black, a white, and a bare ground wire, but includes an additional red conductor, hence the 3 in the name instead of the 2. 14/2 wire has two power carrying conductors, a black, and a white, plus a bare ground wire. You will need 14/2 Romex, and 14/3 Romex. You will need two different types of 14 AWG wire, to wire your three way switch. ![]() Keep it at 12 Amps or less when using 14 AWG wire and standard 15A three way switches, to be safe. This will give you the approximate number of Amps. MATH: Add the wattage of each light together, and then divide it by 120.A 14 AWG is good for 15 Amps, which is good enough for most lighting applications. The lower the AWG, the more current the wire can carry. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge, and describes how much current the wire can carry. In most circumstances, for residential lighting, you will be using 14 AWG Romex wire. First let’s talk about the different types of wire you are likely to use when wiring a three way switch for lighting.

You have to ensure you’re checking your tires regularly. Of course, knowing your recommended PSI isn’t enough. Do you notice your rides feeling bumpier than usual lately? Do you hear noise when steering or have difficulty steering? These are signs that your tires may be low on air. If you see your tires sagging a bit with more weight added to your car, then you probably need to inflate them more. Do you see any flattening? If your answer is yes, then your tires probably need more air. Are the tires firm or do they have some give? If your they feel soft, it’s time to add more air. Press on your wheels using your hand or foot. If you happen to find yourself without a tire gauge and your car doesn’t have an indicator for low tire pressure, there are several things you can do to figure out whether your tires need to be inflated. 3 How to check tire pressure without a gauge Take your car to a mechanic you trust for a professional assessment. If it’s cold outside, then you can assume your tires are losing PSI and you should check even more frequently. Temperature has a direct effect on your air tires’ air pressure, so for an accurate PSI reading, make sure to check tire pressure when tires are cold. Underinflated tires can overheat and wear unevenly overinflated tires can blow out. The proper PSI is crucial to your safety and the car’s longevity. 2 Find Tire PSIįind your tires’ recommended PSI in the owner’s manual or on a sticker just inside the driver’s side door. With a digital pressure gauge, simply read the number on the screen. ![]() Read dial pressure gauges as you would a watch with one hand. If you’re using a pen-style gauge, read the number on the rod that pops out of the sleeve. Put the pressure gauge into the valve stem, making sure the gauge is evenly and firmly pressed onto the stem. Digital pressure gauges - Display numbers on a digital screen.Dial pressure gauges - Feature a numbered dial with a watch-like hand.Stick-type pressure gauges - Have a ruler-like rod that slides in and out of a sleeve to measure air pressure. When it comes to choosing a gauge, you typically have 3 options: Knowing how to check tire pressure is critical to your safety and to keeping your tires in good working order. Overfilling your tires is just as dangerous as underfilling them, so it’s important you know what is recommended for your vehicle. On the other hand, overinflated tires are more susceptible to damage from road irregularities, and they also result in a bumpier ride. Under-inflated tires wear out more rapidly, handle poorly and reduce fuel efficiency. And not having enough air in your tires can lead to other problems. 1 What happens if you drive with low (or high) tire pressure?ĭriving on underinflated tires is one of the biggest causes of tire failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Check the pressure first thing in the morning or wait at least three hours after driving this provides sufficient time for them to cool back down. ![]() Pressure recommendations are based on readings taken from a tire pressure gauge. Even after you’ve replaced your tires, the same pressure guidelines on your car’s label apply to new tires of the same size. The label will usually give recommendations for the front and rear tires as well as the spare, and it’s important that you stick to those guidelines. Depending on the vehicle, this label may be on the edge of the vehicle’s door, on the doorpost or in the glove box. To learn what your tire pressure should be, look for your manufacturer’s recommendation, which is printed on a label inside your car. Because maintaining your tires is so crucial to your safety and your car’s overall performance, it’s important to know what tire pressure is correct for your vehicle. The recommended pressure for tires varies by the type of car and tire. The easiest way to care for your tires is both quick and inexpensive: maintain the correct tire pressure. From a safety and cost standpoint, tire maintenance is one of the most important things you can do for your car. ![]() The next tier starts at $19 per month, and includes all of the free provisions in addition to adding your own watermark, high definition quality, and commercial rights.
